(More customer reviews)This is my second reel from this company....the first was an air hose reel which has worked flawlessly over the years. This water hose reel is well made in the USA. You won't find a better built reel anywhere and doesn't leak a drop of water. The reel brake is a nice feature to ensure your hose doesn't unreel when you don't want it to.
I purchased the reel with Gilmour 20-58100 20 Series Platinum 8 Ply Flexogen Hose which does not work unless you cut off the plastic "Tri-Lobe oval EZ on coupler" which is molded over a traditional female hose fitting. Easy enough to do but amazon should check compatibility before packaging items together as it didn't fit through the side hole of the reel.

(More customer reviews)I love this hose reel. I read reviews by others that were somewhat negative before I made my purchase. Absolutely rediculous. One person couldn't mount it correctly...the mounting holes are perfectly spaced to attach to two wall studs (what did this person do wrong?) The unit is STRONG. Another person said the hose flops around when you wind it. Well, you should let the hose slide through the hand that isn't winding it up - end of problem. The one slight issue - which is fine with me - is that when you pull the hose out to use, the reel keeps on unreeling for a moment after you stop pulling. To fix - pull a little slower.

Consequently, you need to manually guide the hose back and forth as it retracts which gets you just as dirty as a manual rewind that needs to be guided.

(More customer reviews)I received my order in record time and just finished assembling this hose reel. It matched the picture to a tee. Our previous hose reel was not of the same quality as this one, even though it cost more. The center section of our old reel had been crushed when the hose was wound on to it with no pressure and then pressurized. The center section of this reel is of substantially heavier gauge and I doubt it will be crushed. All of the hose fittings are of machined brass and that includes the swivel section. The swivel even has a C-clip so that it can be taken apart and the O-ring seals inside replaced when the time comes. These fittings were made of steel on our old hose reel and rusted badly over time. Replacing the seals on the old reel was not possible and it was starting to leak badly. I give lots of brownie points for all of the brass fittings and heavy duty welded construction of this reel! I wound about 250 ft of 3/4" OD hose onto the reel and that just about filled it up. I would consider 300 ft to be a little on the optimistic side. Assembly went well and the whole units feels solid and like it will last. It rolls nicely on the large ball bearing wheel, though I could do without having four more tires to keep inflated. I think a set of semi-pneumatic wheels would have served just as well. I feel that for the price, this is a great buy!

I own three different Rapid Reel garden hose reels and they are all excellent.
Pros:
- Every part of this device is well-made of [nearly] 100% rust-proof materials. E.g., the reel-body is 1/10" thick cast aluminum, the swivel mechanism is brass, and it uses stainless steel hardware and brass fittings.
- The painting on my reel is flawless.
- Brass swivel has a 3/4" inside diameter for maximum water flow.
- 10-year no-leakage guarantee; probably the only brand with such a warranty. (Register your reel on-line at Rapid Reel.)
- A solid full-palm design reel handle spins freely on a stainless steel shaft for easy rewinding. Handle is a very tough synthetic material, with a thick aluminum bracket.
- The included 5/8" feeder hose (connecting the reel to a faucet) is high quality, made with weather-resistant rubber, and is 5' long. It has brass fittings and some kind of spiral synthetic reinforcement thread.
- Manual reel brake to keep the hose from unwinding by itself.
- Nicely packaged and easy to assemble.
Cons:
- Lacks a hose guide, which would be helpful when rewinding. We keep a rag nearby and hold the hose with the rag when rewinding to guide it on the reel neatly.
- Lacks a shelf to keep thinks like nozzle accessories.
- This is really minor, but the feeder hose should be 3/4" instead of 5/8", as Rapid Reel used on their reels several years back. That way, there would be no water restrictions when using 3/4" hose.
- Expensive.
Other:
- Before you leave it outside in below freezing temperatures, follow Rapid Reel's instructions for draining all water from the swivel and hose.
Summary:
Rapid Reel models are almost certainly the finest garden hose reels on the market. It lack a hose guide and shelf, but those issues may not be important to you.

Ames True Temper 2388310 Reel Easy Side Mount Hose Reel Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this today at my local hardware outlet... and three frustrating hours later, returned it... Here are my pro's and con's:
Pros:
* Nice color, blends into any house or garden
* Inexpensive
* Doesn't cause skin irritation, vomiting or hives (ok, that's a stretch, but I couldn't think of a third pro and I wanted three)
Cons:
* Flimsy plastic, cheaply made
* Connector to water supply line is plastic, not brass, and despite much tightening, mine dripped and dripped.
* Does NOT hold a 100 foot 5/8" hose. Not even close.
I'm going to order a metal "professional" model on Amazon that's about 3x the price of this...but reviews are very positive and it looks like it will last. This thing will NOT last.

(More customer reviews)The product is as advertized but the design is cheap... Cheap plastic that twists when you wind, flimsy assembly and fragile. Also the leader hose they give you is of bad quality and it collapses if there is any torque at all on it, which there will be when you move the cart... It also has cheap fittings that can't take the wrench you need to tighten them. I replaced the leader hose with a good quality hose with good fittings, lubricated the O-rings that were barely water tight and for now it works as advertized. Not sure when it will start to leak...

A note for those worried about mounting hardware... Mine came with all the hardware needed. Also, please don't let that deter you... While I can understand the nuisance of it not being included, the only mounting hardware needed are 2-3 screws which can be found at any hardware store [even places like WalMart would carry them]. Depending on the surface you would mount this on, the included screws may not be the right type {i.e. wood screws would not have worked for my mount on brick wall, etc}. Just wanted to note that.

(More customer reviews)I've had one of these sitting outside in Florida for 10 years. It is finally starting to disintegrate from the sun but it has served me well all this time. Hopefully the latest version hasn't had too many "Improvements". This reel works just fine! Mine sits on the ground and I can tote it anywhere it is needed. You will have to guide the hose on by hand while you crank it in or it will jam up. Your foot on the front lower cross bar will keep it steady while you crank and the tote bar folds backwards out of the way. There is a rotating hose connection on the end opposite the crank that connects to the hose bib and I've had no trouble with it for 10 years. Just a plain, simple, hose reel that works and lasted 10 years. That's why I bought another one!
I will edit this review when I get the new one (5-7 days).
New one is just like the old one - great!

(More customer reviews)This makes so much sense! My deck no longer has hose snaking all over it, and the can is much lighter than a standard watering can. I do prefer to pull the entire 40 feet of hose out and lock it in place to do the plants in the front of the house (the spigot is in the back) as there is some tension on the hose otherwise, but reeling it back in is a snap - just move the lever to unlock. Well made also, and nothing to rust. As it is sealed, no leaves or sprouts get inside to hinder the water spray. Can't say enough good things about this product.

Hydro Power Auto Rewind Garden Hose Reel Review

(More customer reviews)In previous two years we have purchased 4 Reel-Smart hose reel units (dist by mfgr Hydro Industries) and now this No-Crank unit (still mfgd by Hydro, but distributed under the Suncast label). The rewind mechanism is ingenious, with its water-pressure powered 3-piston hydraulic pump. The unit works well, but I underscore these requirements, lest you think the unit is malfunctioning and head back to the store with it. First, READ THE BROCHURE that comes with the unit and strictly comply with Hydro's recommendations: Use not heavier than medium duty, vinyl or plastic (NOT rubber) 5/8" hose; Do NOT exceed hose length or width specified for your unit; Prior to pulling hose out of the No-Crank, make sure rewind control handle is in REST position, and hose is NOT pressurized; Prior to rewinding, turn water supply OFF and open hose nozzle; Straighten out the hose to be rewound, then pick up nozzle end and set it down near the No-Crank to reduce hose drag force; Move the rewind control to REWIND, then turn on water supply to activate rewind mechanism. As the nozzle gets within a couple feet of fully retracted, turn off water supply, and reset rewind control to REST. You'll be impressed with how this little regimen enables your No-Crank to work like a champ for the long haul. NOTE: An annual light spray of silicone over the length of the hose will help help No-Crank's rewind mechanism distribute the hose neatly over the storage reel.

225 Foot Hose Hideaway Hose Reel with Swivel Base Review

(More customer reviews)I was looking for a reel that would be easier to wind up. I couldn't have been more pleased - it was the #1 purchase / investment I made all year! I have a 75' hose that can be heavy to reel in. Especially with my older reel that didn't have the wind-up guide. (NOTE: always turn off the water and drain the hose first so that it's not so heavy. Live and learn.) The materials are relatively light weight plastic, but I haven't had any problems because I don't have to struggle getting the hose in (or out) - which is a back killer. Sometimes I have to open the thing up to adjust the guide if it stops winding. If you tried to force it at this stage, I think it would break. I'm careful to stop and open the thing up when that happens. I like the storage tray. It's convenient for holding my fertilizer bottle, some soap and a scrub brush.
MOST IMPORTANTLY, I'm not killing my back everytime I reel the hose in! A great investment - especially if you have a bad back!

(More customer reviews)I just got this hose reel, so I'll just go over my initial impressions.
Out of the box you get the hose, a package that contains the circle piece that goes around the end of the hose, two stakes, leader hose, and drain hose. Pretty standard to get it all setup.
After I got it setup, I had it pull in my 100' of commercial grade hose. Now the instructions say this is too thick of hose, but it wound it up without issue when the hose was coiled up right there. However because there wasn't any tension on the hose when I did this, it caused the spool inside to be wrapped too loosely, causing issues getting it back off. I then pulled all the hose out (which slides out nice and smooth, far easier than pulling off a pile), and went to pull it in again. Through grass it couldn't reel in my 100' with the water power, but again this hose probably weighs twice as much as the hose they recommend you use. Had to give it a little extra help, and when it got down to 50' or so it pulled it on it's own. I'm also wondering if the leader hose wasn't kinked, causing it to have less power to pull. Either way it wound up nice and tight on the reel this time.
Couple of things I wish these automatic winders had.
- Designed for thicker hoses, ie more power.
- A manual way of winding. I don't think the water power ever would break, but it would be nice to have a manual way as well.
- A way to attach a normal hose to the dump hose. 12 gallons of water each time you reel up your hose is a lot, would be nice to move it somewhere else with a standard hose.
Overall it seems to be about the same as the other suncast hose winders, other than the outside is a bit more attractive in my opinion. It also is quite narrow, and doesn't include a tray/storage like some others do.
Edit: Tried it with a more standard hose, works most of the time, occasionally gets caught and needs some help, but mostly hands off.
